Attracting Birds to Your Garden with Wild Bird Food

Most bird species have declined since the 70s as a result of environmental changes such as the intensification of farming, land reclamation and drainage, the replacement of native woodland with intensive pine plantations, land development and, of course, pollution. To combat this, we need to provide our feathered friends with an abundance of wild bird food.

Food can be in short supply for all birds during the breeding season and the winter months. Even at the best of times, birds can find themselves under a lot of pressure to find food. It’s for this reason that many garden owners like to give them a helping hand and provide an ample supply of wild bird food in their garden.

Experts are now beginning to appreciate the importance of gardens in both town and country as a wildlife habitat. Individual preferences mean that gardens provide diversity and a variety of food throughout the year, as well as the additional benefits provided by nest boxes and ponds or bird baths.

There was a time when home owners would look to feed the birds during the winter seasons only; however, it is now common to feed them all year round, to keep the garden brimming with life.

We shouldn't overlook the fact that feeding with wild bird food isn't just good for them - we benefit as well. Lots of people get immense pleasure and satisfaction from watching the birds as they visit the feeders and bird tables. Often this is enough, but many of us go on to learn more about the birds that we see, both from our own observations and from television, books or magazines. With this extra knowledge comes a greater appreciation of the challenges that the birds face and their resourcefulness in overcoming them.

Of course, the easiest thing to do is buy some mixed seed and hang up a commercial feeder. However you will have more fun feeding different types of wild bird food, at different feeding stations, and will attract a larger variety of birds.

Feeding wild birds doesn’t have to be expensive but once you start you shouldn’t stop feeding during the winter, once the birds become used to your feeding stations. You can stop feeding in the spring once insects and other fruits become available. Most people, once they start feeding wild birds, don’t want to stop because they enjoy having the birds around to identify and learn about their behaviour. Attracting birds to your garden will also help you control insect pests around your home, yard, and garden.

Along with the wild bird food, you should also put some water out. It not only quenches the thirst of the birds but also serves as birdbaths. You can keep food and water on bird tables. There is a wide range of bird feeders available in the market.

Remember through, if you are leaving for a holiday; remember to load the bird feeders to the maximum. This will enable the birds to feed even while you are away!

Not all bird seed is created equal, and choosing different types attracts various wild birds to the garden. The right combination of bird feeder, seed and placement can attract various colourful birds. A good seed mixture attracts a variety of wold birds to the garden, while a single type of seed may be added to support migrating birds or endangered species. By far the easiest way to buy your wild bird food is via the internet where prices are very competitive.
