The Tier 5 unemployment extension for 99ers still hasn't been spoken about formally in the Senate. This is very sad, considering a 99er could face financial disaster without a benefits bill being passed soon. While there are those out there who don't think another extension is the answer, they don't know the harsh reality of the job market. For each opening, there could be five, ten, even twenty applicants vying for the same position. It's hard for the 99ers to get a job, and it's even worse since they have to worry about their finances.

A Tier 5 extension would give families the bare minimum to survive. It would be enough to pay for food, or if they were lucky enough for food and a small apartment. Without it, families are turning to food stamps and other public benefits. This is hardly enough to survive.

99ers face financial disasters. They are only one hospital trip away from bankruptcy, and many have already foreclosed on their homes. Not providing individuals with the money they need to survive not only puts them in harm's way, it puts the nation's economy in harm's way as well.

So far there has been little coming out of Washington in terms of Tier 5 legislation pending. Only two Senators have spoken out publicly and they are Debbie Stabenow and Chuck Schumer. Neither have gotten the ball rolling, and therefore there are questions over whether or not they really plan on backing or sponsoring a measure in the near future.

Of course, the mid-term elections are coming up. After the Senate returns from summer recess, the focus is going to be on campaigning. Since all of the House and a good chunk of the Senate are up for re-election, there's little hope any measure will be passed before the lame duck sessions begin.

Those who desire a Tier 5 extension should vote wisely, choosing legislators who are likely to side with the millions of out-of-work Americans. Only when politicians side with our needs will anything get done.
