MediaWiki is known as a free of charge web-based wiki application. Made by the Wikimedia Foundation and others, it's useful to run all of the Foundation?s projects, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikinews. Numerous other wikis worldwide also use it to power their websites. It's written in the PHP programming language and uses a backend database.

The first type of the software was deployed to serve the needs of the free content Wikipedia encyclopedia in 2002.
